Anabu II Sessions

Saturday training session for the months of Sept - Nov 2022
    Imus, Cavite

PDF conducted a 3-part webinar series titled,  The Philippine Informal Reading Inventory: What Does it Say About Our Readers?  for 70 general and special education teachers of Anabu II Elementary School  in Imus, Cavite in response to the school’s need to equip their teachers with knowledge and skills to improve their students’ reading skills.

  • Webinar 1 – The Group Screening Test

  • Webinar 2 – The Individual Assessment

  • Webinar 3 – Using Phil-IRI Results to Design Instruction

Through the webinars, the teachers learned more about using the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI), namely the Group Screening Test and the Phil IRI individual tests. To provide authentic learning experiences, PDF used Anabu II’s actual student data for analysis and interpretation to guide the teachers on how to make sense of their school’s data. Finally, in the third webinar, the teachers learned about literacy strategies that can be used in the classroom and for reading intervention.  Various applications were used, such as Google Jamboard, Google Forms, and Kahoot, to make the sessions interactive and to document the teachers’ learning process.

Webinar 1

  • “We need to analyze the data to know in what aspects our learners really need help in. From there we will be able to give the right remediation.”

  • “The purpose of having and conducting the GST to pupils is very important to know their reading ability and what intervention we are going to perform in a particular student.”

  • “The use of assessment tools as a classroom-based measure can describe the learners’ reading performance. The information gathered from the assessment can help design and provide appropriate reading instruction for our pupils.”

Webinar 2:

  • “I learned that it takes a prepared evaluation form, a prepared reading material, a ready ear, a conducive place, a ready student and a ready heart to be able to really dig deep into the reading inventory and help these students’ level up in reading and comprehension.”

Webinar 3:

  • “One way to create positive change for learner performance is to present material in a different way, reading remediation is needed considering the different domains and the goals to prioritize to design a specialize program for each learner and lastly tract child’s performance by giving positive feedbacks to the learners and parents regarding child’s progress.”

  • “A lot of things I really found useful were the reading techniques to help my learners become a reader and some activities that will encourage them to read.”

  • “I learned many activities on how to give remediation to struggling learners that I can use in my class.”

  • “I learned that it is very important to help every child with their reading skill and guide them properly.  And there are so many strategies we can use as a teacher to manage each learner’s needs well.”

To acknowledge PDF’s efforts in facilitating this webinar, the School Division Office of Imus Cavite presented a Certificate of Appreciation to PDF last February 3, 2023, for being one of the stakeholders of Anabu II Elementary School.

Definition of dyslexia

“Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.” (International Dyslexia Association, 2023). https://dyslexiaida.org/definition-of-dyslexia/
